Full Story
A well known set of miracles belongs to the Dutch mystic and saint, Lidwina. At age 15, she broke a rib while ice skating, which led to gangrene and many other painful complications that would affect the rest of her life. Her natural sufferings were later accompanied by the stigmata (wounds of Jesus). Documented testimonies also attest to her gifts of prophecy, ecstasies, ability to describe events at a distance, visions of angels, and the healings of many visitors to her bedside. Lidwina is most known for her Eucharistic fast, in which Holy Communion became her only nourishment during the last 19 years of her life. This was authenticated by several sworn witnesses. In one case, a soldier was assigned to her to test her fasts, on commission of Philip of Burgundy during his occupation of Schiedam. Immediately following her death, celebrated authors Joannes Brugmann and Thomas à Kempis proceeded to write biographies of the saint, describing her sufferings and mystical favors.
