Full Story

After the Swedish forces had captured most of Poland, they approached a monastery in the small town of Jasna Gora. "We will have that hen-house in three days", their general declared, as they began their cannon fire. The general's confidence was justified, given his regiment of 3,000 men far outnumbered the 170 soldiers and 70 monks inside the monastery. However, after 40 days of failure, the forces retreated. The king declared the victory as miraculous, and attributed it to the protective intercession of Our Lady of Czestochowa. This in turn inspired the entire kingdom to rise up against the Swedes, droving them to a full retreat. The two slashes on the cheek of the Blessed Virgin were originally inflicted by a Hussite invader in 1430. Several attempts have been made to repair them, yet the marks have always reappeared. The monastery has become the most popular shrine in Poland, with 1 million visitors each year. Many spectacular miracles have been reported after prayers to the Blessed Mother were made during pilgrimates to the site. Documentation for these testimonies are preserved in the archives of the Pauline Fathers at Jasna Gora.
