Full Story
The classic film "The Exorcist" is loosely based on the real-life story of a 13-year-old boy known as Roland Doe. The case, which took place in the late 1940s, became one of the most well-documented exorcisms in modern history. Roland became possessed after experimenting with a Ouija board, a device often associated with attempts to communicate with spirits. Following the onset of disturbing behavior, his desperate parents sought help from both medical professionals and the Church. The Church, recognizing signs of possession, authorized a series of exorcism rites performed by several Catholic priests. Over the course of about 30 exorcism sessions, those present reported witnessing disturbing phenomena. Roland displayed unnatural, superhuman strength, spoke in deep guttural voices, and reacted violently to religious artifacts. Witnesses also testified to objects flying across the room without any visible cause—events that defied rational explanation. During the final exorcism, as the priests prayed, Roland suddenly came out of his trance-like state. According to those present, he calmly stated: "He’s gone." It was reported that Roland experienced a vision of St. Michael the Archangel defeating the devil. From that moment, Roland was freed from his possession and lived the remainder of his life free from demonic influence. While Hollywood's "The Exorcist" embellished many details for dramatic effect (including the ending), the film’s basic plot was structured from this chilling case.
