Full Story
The Franciscan friar, Peter of Alcantara, had gained a strong reputation in northern Spain due to his holiness and the spread of miracle accounts, including his ecstasies during prayer combined with levitations and illumination by light. During one Easter week, the crowds coming to see the saint were so large that Mass was moved to an outdoor altar to accommodate the numbers. However, during the beginning of the celebration, an intense storm suddenly blew in that naturally alarmed the congregation. But as their holy saint remained calm, most of the people stayed in place. The storm continued to intensify with thunder and lightning on all sides, and one of the local priests took it as a sign of evil spirits. Nevertheless, Peter of Alcantara prevented him from saying any exorcism prayers, and reassured the people by simply continuing the Mass. The storm then abruptly passed "as if the ebbing air had but one wave". Everyone was utterly amazed that not a single drop of rain fell on their area, despite the drenched countryside in every direction. Even more miraculously, not a single candle was extinguished by the strong winds. At the conclusion of the Mass, a song of thanksgiving arose from the outdoor gathering, along with further confidence in the sanctity of their humble friar.
