Details

Location: Cairo, Egypt

Year: 1968

Prayer: A Coptic prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary (traditionally prayed at 6am): O Theotokos (Mother of God), the second heaven You are the honoured Mother of the Light. From sunrise to sunset the faithful offer you praises. You are the bright and unchanging flower and the mother who remained a virgin for the Father chose you and the Holy Spirit overshadowed you and the Son deigned to take flesh from you. Wherefore, ask the Lord to give salvation to the world which He created and to deliver it from all tribulations. Let us praise the Lord and sing to Him a new song now and forever and from all ages to all ages. Amen.

Verse: Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there till I tell you; for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.” And he rose and took the child and his mother by night, and departed to Egypt, and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfil what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, “Out of Egypt have I called my son.” -Mt 2:13-15

Full Story

From 1968 to 1971, a series of visions occurred at St. Mary’s Coptic Orthodox Church in Zeitoun, Egypt, a district of Cairo. Thousands of witnesses reported seeing a luminous figure of a woman on the church's roof. In April 1968, two Muslim bus mechanics working across from the church noticed a luminous figure on the roof and mistook her for a woman about to jump. As crowds gathered, they realized this was no ordinary person. The appearances were often accompanied by flashing lights and dove-like forms, adding to the spectacle. Over the next three years, the apparitions of the lady, believed to be the Blessed Virgin Mary, occurred multiple times per week. On some nights, up to 250,000 people gathered, with estimates suggesting millions witnessed the events over time. The crowd was a mix of Christians, Muslims, and people of no faith. Numerous photographs were taken, and reports of miraculous healings continued to emerge. The Coptic Orthodox Church, in consultation with the Catholic Church, officially declared the events supernatural. Even the Egyptian government, on order of President Gamal Abdel Nasser, sent investigators to assess the situation, and their findings ruled out any form of hoax or trickery. This remains one of the few miraculous events in history to receive validation from government authorities. It is considered the most widely witnessed supernatural occurrence on record.
