Full Story

Over a span of several years, Venezuelan mystic Maria Esperanza reported multiple apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the remote area of Betania. The Virgin Mary, referred to as "Mary, Virgin and Mother, Reconciler of All People and Nations," appeared with messages urging repentance, prayer, and the need for unity among all people. Alongside Maria’s visions, other witnesses experienced remarkable phenomena. Reports included seeing a brilliant light emerging from the hill, the "dancing of the sun"—a phenomenon similar to that of Fatima—and even hearing an invisible choir singing heavenly music. Notably, on March 25, 1984, a major apparition was witnessed by 108 people, who saw the Virgin Mary with their own eyes. By the end of the investigation, over 2,000 testimonies were collected, with witnesses from all walks of life, including clergy, scientists, and laypeople, who described similar mystical occurrences. One of the most extraordinary personal miracles involved Maria Esperanza herself. On multiple occasions, she experienced a miraculous red rose appearing from her chest, leaving witnesses—some of them doctors—in disbelief. This inexplicable event added further credibility to the supernatural nature of the visions and drew additional attention to the apparitions at Betania. The growing number of testimonies led to an intense investigation by the local Church authorities. After a thorough three-year examination, the local bishop, Pio Bello Ricardo, declared the Betania apparitions authentic in 1987, making it an official site of pilgrimage.
