Full Story

On June 12, 1973, Sister Agnes Sasagawa, a nun from Akita, Japan, saw brilliant rays of light emanating from the tabernacle in her convent’s chapel. This phenomenon occurred repeatedly for the following two days, leaving the sisters in awe. Shortly after, a wooden statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the convent began to display mysterious signs. Over the course of six years, the statue was witnessed by many to bleed from its hand, sweat, and weep human tears. In total, the statue shed tears 101 times. Laboratory analysis confirmed that the tears were of human origin. These events drew significant attention, even being televised across Japan. During this time, Sister Agnes also reported receiving three messages from the Blessed Virgin Mary. The messages called for repentance, prayer, and penance. One particular message stressed the need for reparation for the sins of mankind. The messages also carried warnings of future suffering and turmoil if humanity did not turn back to prayer and conversion. The Akita apparitions garnered the attention of Church authorities, and after years of investigation, Bishop John Shojiro Ito of Niigata officially recognized the supernatural nature of the events in 1984, declaring them worthy of belief. Sister Agnes’ experiences continue to inspire reflection and pilgrimage to Akita.
