Full Story

Attorney Jack Sullivan was training to become a Deacon at age 61, when he had surgery on his spinal cord that left him in excruciating pain and virtually immobile. His doctor said it was one of the worst cases he had ever seen, and the recovery process was expected to take months or years. Jack carried a particular devotion to Cardinal Newman, an Anglican convert from the 1800s who himself had endured many ailments during his lifetime. After a prayer to the Cardinal, Jack recounted, “Suddenly I felt an intense heat, like an oven blast, and a strong tingling sensation throughout my whole body. I felt an indescribable sense of joy and peace, and was totally transfixed by what I believed to be God’s presence.” Minutes later, he yelled to his nurse: "I have no more pain!" Sullivan's surgeon, Dr. Robert Banco, said the instant, pain-free recovery was incomparable to any of his hundreds of patients in 15 years of practice. Further investigation into the case determined the healing to be spontaneous, instantaneous, complete, lasting, and unexplainable. It thus met the stringent criteria to qualify Cardinal Newman as a “Blessed” (another step towards being declared a saint). A 2013 healing of Melissa Villalobos in Chicago led to his official sainthood.
