Prayer: Act of Contrition: I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good, I have sinned against you whom I should love above all things. I firmly intend, with your help, to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin. Amen.
Verse: We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be made visible in our bodies. For while we live, we are always being given up to death for Jesus’ sake, so that the life of Jesus may be made visible in our mortal flesh. -2 Cor 4:8-11
Full Story
Thousands of visitors would arrive daily to the town of Ars, seeking spiritual and physical healing from the local priest, Father John Vianney. One pilgrim in hope of a miracle, Claudine Venet, was taken there after she became both deaf and blind following a terrible fever. On her arrival, she was standing outside the church as the priest passed by. Without speaking a word (and before having met her), he took her hand and led her into the confessional. He had hardly given his blessing when her sight and hearing returned. It seemed like she had awakened from a long dream. After her confession, Fr. Vianney gave the following prophecy: “Your eyes are healed, but you will become deaf for another twelve years. It is God's will that it should be so.” On leaving, Claudine felt her ears close, yet she remained grateful for her eyesight. Great was her joy when, on January 18, 1862, she became perfectly cured of her deafness as well. A great number of healings surrounded Fr. Vianney. 30 official accounts were reviewed by the Church during investigations into his cause for sainthood, which were only a sample of those reported throughout his four decades in Ars.
