Full Story
Mary of Agreda, a 17th-century Spanish nun, was known for her reported ability to bilocate—being physically present in one place while simultaneously appearing in another. On multiple occasions, she appeared to members of the Jumano tribe in what is now New Mexico and Texas. Although she only spoke Spanish, the Jumano people reportedly understood her in their own language. Some members of the Jumano tribe sought out Catholic priests in the area, stating that a lady dressed in blue had urged them to learn more about the Christian faith. This description aligned with Mary, who always wore the blue habit of her religious order, the Conceptionist nuns. The phenomenon of Mary's reported bilocation drew the attention of Church officials, including the Archbishop of Mexico, who conducted an investigation. Over the course of 11 years, more than 500 instances of her presence in the New World were documented. During the investigation, Church authorities cross-referenced Mary’s own testimony with that of the Jumanos. Remarkably, Mary accurately described the people she encountered, including specific details such as a one-eyed Jumano leader whom she had met. The Jumanos, in turn, provided matching accounts of the woman who had appeared to them, further corroborating her story. Moreso than these events, Mary became known for her writings. In her spiritual work 'The Mystical City of God', she discussed the nature of spiritual gifts and the flow of God’s grace. Reflecting on the soul's openness to divine influence, she wrote, "So great is the impetus of the river of God's goodness overflowing on mankind ... if creatures would place no obstacle and permit its operations, the whole soul would be inundated and satiated with participating in its divine essence and attributes."
